The Genesis of AFCO
The African Council of Optometry (AFCO) was born out of a critical necessity: the need for a unified voice to advocate for eye health and standardized optometric practice across the continent. Prior to our founding, national associations worked in silos, limiting the cross-border exchange of clinical knowledge and legislative advocacy.
Visionary leaders from across the continent convened to draft a constitution that would bridge these gaps. Today, AFCO stands as the recognized apex body for optometry in Africa, proudly affiliated with the World Council of Optometry (WCO), and committed to eradicating preventable blindness through education, policy reform, and professional excellence.
Milestones of Progress
Establishment of the Council
National delegates from the foundational member countries met to ratify the first AFCO constitution, officially establishing a continental body dedicated to the advancement of optometry in Africa.
World Council of Optometry Affiliation
AFCO was officially recognized and integrated as the regional affiliate for Africa by the World Council of Optometry (WCO), giving African practitioners a definitive voice on the global stage.
Educational Expansion & Partnerships
AFCO solidified strategic partnerships to integrate specialized clinical modules, such as Low Vision Training, directly into the continental education framework to standardize practitioner skills.
Launch of Continental Clinical Platforms
To promote African-led research and clinical studies, AFCO expanded its digital and publication footprint, providing peer-reviewed platforms for continental advancements in vision science.
